Jackie Grebmeier, Dennis Conlon, Mike Ledbetter, John Christensen, Andreas Hieberg, Terry Whitledge, Knut Aagaard, Eddy Carmack, Igor Melnikov, Jim Moore, Lou Codispoti, Ken Dunton, and Barbara Clark

Grebmeier addressed questions from others regarding no mail review of proposals. Ledbetter said it was a NSF decision for no mail review final; necessary for timing of proposal funding in October 2001.

Announcement of Opportunity for SBI II status – released end of February, proposals due end of May, funding in October 2001; also, ADCP being added back into core proposal category for AO and Implementation Plan.

Division of Ocean Science ended partnership with ARCSS program. Ledbetter says NSF will reshuffle funds to cover planned projects.

International contribution: Arctic Ocean Studies Board – Should we be part of these or plan for pan-Arctic interactions-ans. Jackie should outline SBI project at upcoming meetings and willingness to collaborate in international realm as other countries spin up SBI objectives.

Grebmeier planning to present SBI project to AOSB, other international boards, as information at upcoming April Arctic Summit in Iqaluit, Canada in April 2001.

Codispoti – not necessary beyond what we have until other countries develop own SBI projects.

Carmack – DFO/CASES relationship; CASES postponed by 1 year; working on obtaining a ship to freeze into ice; discussed upcoming cruises, plans for moorings on climate line Mackenzie River to 3000; DFO on hold for ASPI; Jackie will revise SBI map as to new DFO mooring location.

Melnikov – Russian political climate getting more positive. SBI working on collaboration in Russian waters. Additional discussion about Russian collaboration.

Aagaard – Jackie will contact Dr. Zhivago with info about application for U of Alaska to work with Russian cruises.

Whitledge – Including Russians on clearance proposal should help on application.

Aagaard – is anything being done to promote work until applications approved?

Whitledge – in future, suggested presenting draft to set things in motion with application to follow.

Carmack – discussed use of Russian ships, Canadian Coast Guard, etc. for cruises.

Ledbetter – nice conversation about collaboration with other ships, but NSF will only fund Healy and USCG icebreakers because of previous agreement with Coast Guard.

Ledbetter Data management – What data is being posted?
Use of password protect.
Call and ask for data to see if owner will share.
If not NSF will get involved.

Grebmeier - Will bring up data sharing again in general meeting in afternoon session.

Cost of Healy - $20-50K/day

Codispoti – too many meetings, need to look for ways to combine meetings or have fewer.
